Psychotherapy get’s a bad rap in the media today. Think about it, most movies and TV shows depict a visit to a “shrink” as a person lying (or sitting) on a couch with the psychologist sitting behind a desk, scribbling away on a pad of paper. I think this stigma may actually prevent some people from seeking psychotherapy from a licensed therapist.

Modern Psychotherapy Is About Finding Effective Solutions

The truth is that modern day psychotherapy is nothing like that. You actually sit in a regular chair, not a couch, and talk to the therapist who typically sit’s in front of you, not behind a desk. Typically, they’ll be looking directly at you, engaged in what you’re saying and not feverishly scribbling on some pad of paper. The best part is as “the client” you can choose any therapist you like. It’s really like dating, you gather enough information about the person until you’re comfortable meeting face to face for the first time. Then after a few visits you may not quite “click” with the therapist and decide to try another one. But eventually, and maybe on the first try, you’ll find a psychotherapist who helps you more than you could ever have imagined.

So don’t be afraid or hesitant to try psychotherapy. Instead work with one to develop coping strategies to reduce your anxiety and get your health back.
